This charming town along the Passirio River is known throughout Europe as an acclaimed health resort, as it has been since centuries. Merano gradually became a favourite port of call for the Habsburg, Prussian, Russian, British and French aristocracy. The embodiment of this noble confluence was Empress Elisabeth of Austria, affectionately known as Sissi, who is commemorated through a statue in the city and several other dedications.
Merano’s promotion to VIP Central European health resort led to the creation of a new urban look. The city built promenades for strolling, erected luxurious hotels, and created infrastructure that would improve the quality of its tourist facilities: the Pavillon des Fleurs, the Kurhaus, the theatre, the Wandelhalle covered walkway and the Kurmittelhaus are only the best known of the many additions. New garden-city neighbourhoods also sprung up around the historical centre, providing ample space for grand residences, inns and villas.
